Science and medical need
Every preterm birth is a nutritional emergency
More than 15 million infants are born prematurely every year. To avoid lifelong complications from nutritional deficits, they need more energy per kilogram of body weight than a Tour de France cyclist.* But in the NICU, nutrition competes with many other urgent priorities.
Born before the nutrient reserves are built.
Most of a baby’s nutrient reserves (fat, protein, iron, calcium, phosphorus and long-chain fatty acids like DHA) are laid down in the last trimester. The earlier a baby is born, the smaller those stores are, and the greater the gap nutrition has to close.
Higher needs, immature systems.
Preterm infants need more of most nutrients than infants born at term. At the same time, an immature gut and metabolism make it harder to digest, absorb and use what they are given.
A critical window for brain development.
The brain develops rapidly during the weeks a preterm infant spends in the NICU. Getting nutrition right during this window matters for long-term growth and neurodevelopment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a food supplement and a Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP)?
Food supplements are intended to supplement the normal diet and are concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect, supplied in dose form.
FSMPs are specially formulated for the dietary management of patients with particular nutritional requirements and are intended to be used under medical supervision.
ProPrems® is classified as a food supplement in most countries where it is available, although its regulatory classification may vary by market. NeoMega36® is a Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP). Please refer to the product information applicable in your country for local regulatory information.
In which countries are ProPrems® and NeoMega36® available?
Availability varies by product and country. Please contact Neobiomics for personalised information.
Where is Neobiomics based, and where are its products manufactured?
Neobiomics is headquartered in Sweden, and both ProPrems® and NeoMega36® are manufactured in the European Union. Each product is manufactured and tested according to its respective product specifications and quality requirements.
Where can healthcare professionals find more information about Neobiomics products?

What does “defined bacterial strains” mean?
A bacterial strain is a specific variant within a bacterial species, identified by a unique strain designation. ProPrems® contains three defined strains: B. longum subsp. infantis Bb-02, B. animalis subsp. lactis BB-12® and S. thermophilus TH-4®.
Identifying microorganisms at strain level provides precise information about the bacterial strains contained in the product and allows their identity and characteristics to be documented and controlled throughout manufacturing and quality testing.
What quality controls are performed for ProPrems®?
From the start of production to final batch release, a process that takes approximately six months, ProPrems® undergoes quality-control and microbiological testing at different stages. This includes testing for microbial contaminants during the production process, as well as defined quality-control testing before final batch release.
How is ProPrems® supplied?
How does NeoMega36 reduce the “preterm PUFA gap”?
NeoMega36® reduces the “preterm PUFA gap” by providing early, balanced and targeted supplementation of DHA and ARA to replace the fatty acids that preterm infants miss from late-gestation placental transfer.
