Supporting Growth with a Strategic Mindset

Staffan Thunell is one of our board members at Neobiomics and has a long background in entrepreneurship within the life science industry. He has 20 years of experience as Founder, Chairman, CEO, and CFO in medical affairs consulting and small pharma. Previously, Staffan had executive positions in marketing and portfolio development positions in big pharma and specialty pharma companies.

Tell us about yourself

My professional path for the last 20 years has been one of entrepreneurship. I am an economist by education, and I co-founded our first company in 2002 after 10 years of working in various businesses, whereof 7 years in executive positions within big pharma and specialty pharma.

You worked with a bunch of other companies, what caught your interest in Neobiomics?

Talking to our founders Stefan and Phillip, I was intrigued by hearing about their dream to establish ProPrems® as an important food supplement. But also, about the financial, legal, and compliance challenges involved in getting the business running. With my background from founding companies and my experiences in the pharma field, I offered my assistance – which luckily was accepted!

Where do you see Neobiomics in 5 years?

Neobiomics is on the right track moving steadily from start-up to scale-up. The extensive specialist knowledge and network of our founders, the sales capacity that has been developed, together with dedicated investors, give the company a perfect position to attract other products, within the neonatal care specialty as well as related areas.

You have a lot of experience in the industry, what helped you most during your experience with Neobiomics?

I hope to have contributed with knowledge about building a company in general – and a health care business in particular. Our business has rather high entrance barriers, legally and regulatory-wise, and my experience from dealing with those has helped. I also hope my experience in strategic business development has, and will be, of importance.

You have extensive experience with over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription (RX) products, how different is it working with ProPrems® as it is a food supplement?

ProPrems® is a specialty product very much like niched Rx products. Naturally, due to legislation, the marketing mix is different, but in most other aspects it is not much different from establishing any specialty pharma product.

What is your advice for young people starting a job?

My advice for a successful career is to get aware of your comparative advantages and learn to use them in the best way. Also, to have a good life and stay healthy and happy, follow your dreams!

What was your first-ever job? 

My first job was as a tennis coach and trainer for kids at the island in Stockholm archipelago where I grew up.
